The Canadian Shield is a large area of Precambrian rock exposed at surface across much of Canada. These rocks form the central core of North America, and are a vital part of Canada’s history and economy. This module explores how the Canadian Shield was formed, and why it is important to Ontarians.

• Identify the main geological provinces of the Canadian Shield in Ontario and relate them to events in Earth’s history.
• Recognize a variety of geologic processes that have contributed to the wealth of resources available in the Canadian Shield and appreciate their importance to Canada’s historical and economic development.
• Describe the “Terrane Concept” in relation to the building of the Canadian Shield.
