Where am I?
You are in the Niagara Gorge. Niagara Falls is upstream.
Cataract Group
The lower slope and ledge is made of the lower formations of the Cataract Group. These units were deposited during the latter part of the Lower Silurian.
Whirlpool Formation
This prominant ledge is the Whirlpool Sandstone. It was deposited in the Lower Silurian.
Rochester Formation
The Rochester formation is recessive, which means that it forms the "slope" part of the hill because it erodes easily. It was deposited during the Middle Silurian.
Queenston Shale
You can just barely see the reddish colouration of the Queenstone shale here near water level. These shales were deposited during the Upper Ordovician. This photo shows the formation more clearly just a little ways downstream at the Adam Beck Powerplant.
Sir Adam Beck Power Station
Sir Adam Beck was a politician and a pioneer to hydroelectricity having founded the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. He was firmly opposed to the power grid run by privately owned companies, feeling them as inadequate to serve the publics' needs. He was knighted in 1914 for his work in electricity and power transmission across southern Ontario.
Lockport Dolostone
The caprock of the Niagara Gorge is the Lockport Dolostone. This hard unit is the protective ledge that covers underlying softer formations. It is Middle Silurian in Age
Irondequoit Formation
The Irondequoit is one of the best marker units across southern Ontario because it often forms a tough, resistant ledge.
