Habit: Light green or colorless to pale yellow. Crystals euhedral, stout prismatic or thick tabular; also in botryoidal or spheroidal radiating aggregates. Vitreous luster; transparent. White streak.
Environment: Forms principally in granitic pegmatites in association with quartz, albite, topaz and tourmaline.
Etymology: Named after Siegmund August Wolfgang von Herder (1776-1838), a mining official from Freiberg, Saxony, in Germany.
