Habit: Pale green, emerald green, bluish green or colorless. Uncommon in crystals; may be lathlike but usually fine-grained and massive, in nodules, stalactites, crusts and veinlets. Vitreous to waxy luster; transparent to translucent. White streak.
Environment: Typically deposited from phosphate-bearing waters in contact with aluminous rocks
Etymology: From Variscia, the ancient name of the Voigtland district in Germany, where the mineral was discovered.
