Habit: White, greenish white, green, yellow, brown, bluish brown or brownish black; can be zoned. Commonly radial aggregates or prismatic crystals, elongated and striated; euhedral crystals uncommon. Vitreous to resinous, pearly luster; translucent. White streak.
Environment: A secondary mineral in low-grade metamorphic rocks and phosphate deposits.
Etymology: Named for William Wavell, a physician from Horwood parish in Devon, England, who discovered the mineral.
