Habit: Pale yellow to yellowish brown, light brown or smoky violet; also colorless, pale rose, gray, yellowish gray or pale green. Crystals short prismatic to prismatic, rarely thick tabular; also granular or massive. Adamantine luster; transparent to translucent. White streak.
Environment: Formed in the oxidation zone of lead ore deposits, especially where seawater or other sources of chlorine are present.
Etymology: From the gas phosgene, or carbonyl dichloride (COCl2), because the mineral also contains carbon, oxygen and chlorine.
