Habit: Colorless, white, pink, orange, red, honey-colored, green, emerald green (gem quality, called tsavorlite in Europe and tsavorite in North America), reddish brown (hessonite) or brown; rarely black. Commonly in dodecahedra or trapezohedra with striated faces; also granular, compact or massive. Vitreous luster; transparent to opaque. Brownish white streak.
Environment: Ordinarily found in both regional and thermal calcium-rich metamorphic rocks; also occurs in association with serpentine and rodingites.
Etymology: From the Latin botanical name for gooseberry (Ribes grossularia), because of its greenish color.
